We all draw on our past when it comes to judging education. Better yet, we judge education by how well the children are doing. We want kids to be prepared to live successfully in the world when they become adults, and we expect schools to prepare them. Their world is the 21st Century.

The Internet Generation

Children in school today are part of the Internet Generation, or N-geners for short. What we need to be asking ourselves is if the schools of today are preparing this young Internet generation well enough to be successful in their future of tomorrow? Our society is no longer reliant on farming and industrial pursuits to be successful? What will be the defining aspects of the lives of the Internet Generation? What tools will they need to thrive in their world? It seems as though everyone has their own opinion, let us explore what the owners and managers in corporate America will be looking for from this generation.

In the article Rigor Redefined (2008), Tony Wagner interviewed many corporate CEOs to find out what they are looking for in todays workforce. Wagner was surprised at some of the answers he discovered to his questions. For example, the President of BOC Edwards indicated that what he was looking for first and foremost was someone to ask good questions. He stated that while they could always teach the technical stuff, it is very difficult to teach someone how to think and to ask good questions.

A great number of these high level managers shared a common desire to find employees able to cooperate as a team to talk over and solve the immediate problems their company face today. Educators need to understand these real world needs and prepare our students by providing the tools to help them contribute quickly in the real world. Provide real case studies and problems to solve and forget about standard worksheets that dont help the students think for themselves. If they have the opportunity to work in groups and present their findings in a real world way, they will be better prepared for the work force.

Redefine Rigor

It is critical that schools today review their current curriculums and modify them to meet the needs our children will have in the future. So often packaged curriculum materials are becoming the entire lesson plan, rather than a supplement for the teacher. And I am concerned that teachers have no need to consider the real world ramifications of a lesson because the entire plan is provided in Teachers Guides. It is also troubling that school districts are requiring teachers to report their lessons on weekly planning and pacing guides, making it difficult for a teacher to apply the lessons to the real world.

A favorable rapport between student and teacher is critical to the learning process. A student must feel that their teacher understands where they are coming from and how they will learn the best. Teachers can meet this goal best when they are able to provide relevant lesson plans that their students can relate to.

Technology

This is the internet generation. We need to find ways for students to use technology in their learning. It is natural to them, and we can introduce them to the many ways technology can be used for good. The use of smart boards, projectors for PowerPoint presentations, classroom response systems, and even cell phones may be in our future as teachers. Rather than resisting this trend, we must find ways to embrace it and further connect to the children of the Internet Generation.

Integrated Learning

To avoid the dry and uninteresting approaches found in packaged programs and planning and pacing guides, integrate reading and writing into rich content. Use social studies and science to promote and practice what was learned in reading and writing class.

The current trend toward curriculum narrowing in social studies and science is sad indeed. Transfer those skills students need to practice and integrate them into everything else you are doing. Without sufficient social studies and science instruction, we are leaving our students bereft of essential background knowledge upon which other knowledge can be built.

Many school districts have the added struggle of teaching children from poor families. Almost 17% of all school age children come from families existing below the poverty line. These children dont have the same opportunities as middle and upper class peers to gain background knowledge or vocabulary skills. A narrow curriculum focused only on tested subjects of reading, writing and math, rather than integrating secondary subjects such as social studies, science and the arts will only make these trends more noticeable.

Building of cultural literacy through social studies, science and the arts should become a mission for parents and teachers alike in order to provide all children a chance for a better life. It is a known fact that a person will learn something new much better if they have something on which to compare it with. School is often the best place to provide this knowledge, particularly for those students from lower socio-economic backgrounds.

Numerous studies have found that academic achievement translates to higher incomes, and that cultural literacy has a direct effect on a students academic achievement. To prepare students o the Internet Generation for the future they will face as adults in the 21st Century, educators must provide opportunities to expand the students stores of knowledge and cultural literacy, not just focus on the tested subjects of reading, writing and math.

First thing you have to do is sit on the ball as you would on a ordinary chair. Place both feet firmly on the ground. Without hurrying lean back, allowing the ball to gently roll underneath you, then stop when your upper body and thighs are parallel to the floor. Tilt your upper body as you would with a simple crunch and stop halfway up. Keep it there for about 5 seconds and lower your back on the ball.

3. Weighted Sit Ups. Lie back on the floor, bend your knees, and keep your feet firmly on the floor. Place a light weight over your chest and keep it with both hands for that added resistance. Bring your shoulder up off the floor gradually without moving your legs. After reaching a challenging angle, keep it there for a few, and go back to your first form.

4. Full Body Crunches. This routine for abdominals has got to be one of my faves. Lie on the ground again, cross your arms over your chest, and hold those knees bent. Lift your torso off the ground while you pull in both knees toward your pelvis. Hold it there for a second, assume the initial position, then start over.

Don't forget to keep your abdominal muscles firm with every drill for abdominals. With a well-balanced diet and a simple fitness program, you won't achieve anything less than great six pack abs.

It is possible that right now, you just have to let go of her and if she decides to come back to you, just be happy about it. On the other hand, if she doesn't choose to get back together with you, you have to respect her feelings and go on with your life. This is a relatively easy mortgage to understand and is familiar to individuals who are purchasing or refinancing a home. As this is one of the biggest expenses you may encounter in your life, knowing a little about this type of mortgage will lay a foundation for you to be able to research both fixed rate mortgages as well as other mortgage products which have their foundation in this basic model.

The fixed rate mortgage is by far the most common type of mortgage. When new homebuyers begin pricing loans, these are typically where people will start. Most fixed rate mortgages advertised also usually talk about the rate for a 30 year "fixed" rate. When people talk about their mortgage, there is a very good chance that they are referring to their 30 year fixed. A little less common are the adjustable rate mortgages. Of course there are dozens of different mortgage products available based on the needs you have. Interesting that the selling of "money" is basically packaged in different forms just like any other product or service.

These fixed rate mortgages are most commonly setup with 15 or 30 year term, but also have options for a 10 year or 20 year, or even a 40 year mortgage. The longer the mortgage term, typically the lower the interest rate as the bank or financial institution that is extending the loan will typically make more money, at least via interest paid on the loan. This is why the shorter term rates are typically a higher rate.

Fixed rate mortgages have the same payment for each period. The benefit here is that you are able to base your monthly budget or even bi-weekly budget from the amount you'll be paying each month towards your mortgage. Because the rate doesn't change, neither does the monthly payment. This makes the fixed rate mortgage very predictable.

There are several loan products or mortgage programs that have what is known as a "balloon" payment where payments are made either directly to the interest as in the case of an interest only loan or even interest and principal with a lump sum due at the end of a given period (usually a couple of years). The fixed rate mortgage is different in this regard, at least the traditional style of mortgage here this article discusses. When you pay off your mortgage with a fixed rate mortgage, you owe nothing more to the bank or lender. There is no need to refinance your home or come up with cash to pay towards a lump sum payment or balloon payment. This style of mortgage is probably the most conservative of the various mortgage products.

On a typical 30 year fixed rate mortgage, you'll pay your monthly payment of which a percentage of that amount would go toward the principal and the other percentage goes towards interest. This is done on a sliding scale, so the first years of the mortgage, you'll be paying more in interest to the bank than paying down your loan. This is as designed by the banks who fund these mortgages. Their expectation is that they get their interest paid to them before you're "allowed" to use more of your regular monthly payment to go towards the principal. This is all done behind the scenes, but it is interesting to know that you won't start paying more towards your principal than interest until year 22 of your mortgage. There isn't anything to prevent you from paying down your mortgage early, however, and may be a very good idea depending on your life situation.

Getting a fixed rate mortgage is a good program for a large percentage of home owners in today's society. Keep in mind, however, that this is not the only option. But, if you understand the basics of the fixed rate mortgage, you'll better understand the other mortgage products that are available as they are explained to you by your loan officer. It's important to find someone you can trust to work with on your home loan. This will get you most of the way to where you need to be for getting a mortgage or looking into refinancing.

12 Ways Nurses Make a Difference for Chronically Ill Patients

The profession of medicine could not operate without nurses. It's not a secret to anyone who has ever been to a doctor's appointment or had a hospital stay that the nurses define our experience and even recovery process perhaps more than any other medical professional we encounter. We may be having a routine procedure, setting up a regular appointment, or having a serious conversation with the doctor; but the presence of a nurse may shape how well the patient deals with the situation and psychologically handles the outcome.

Those of us with illness can be quick to criticize the nurses who hardly acknowledge us, who forget to bring our medications when we are in the hospital, and who seem to enjoy their job as the gatekeeper to their doctor a little too much.

That said, chronically ill patients have a long list of encounters with nursing staff over the years, so we also have the advantage of being able to warm-heartedly recollect the nurses who made undeniable improvements in our healthcare. Perhaps she was an advocate on our behalf when no one else would listen. She may have looked the other way when visiting hours at the hospital were over. Or maybe she just held your hand while you had a painful (and lonely) medical procedure.

Recently, when I was checked into the hospital, the nurse from the wound care center had to push me in a wheelchair through an outside maze of a construction zone walkway. Ironically, she shared that she too had rheumatoid arthritis like myself. I felt like I made a new friend in those ten minutes and she made me much more comfortable in getting to my destination.

As the editor of HopeKeepers Magazine, I have tried to get a nurse to write an article explaining what a typical day is like at a doctor's office where she is employed. I know many minutes are filled with frantic scheduling issues, checking patients in, trying to please the physicians, all while doing more that can be expected in the time allotted.

No one has volunteered. One even said, "If word got out, I would lose my job!"

By understanding each others needs however, we can only improve the long term relationship between the nurse and the patient. Sadly, many marriages don't last as long as the nurse/patient relationship!

Here are 12 ways to better understand the chronically ill patient.

[1] When you ask what medications I am currently taking, please don't look flabbergasted or skeptical when I pull out a couple of sheets of paper. I'm really not an addict.

[2] I grew weary of always been patient and only having everyone interested in what my body is doing. When you ask me how I am doing emotionally or coping with my illness, I feel like you really do care and I will naturally be more forthcoming about my physical symptoms that may be beneficial for the doctor to know.

[3] Thanks for celebrating little things with me, such as reaching a goal weight or decreasing a medication. I know you see these things every day, but to me they are a big deal. You are one of the few people who understand how hard it is for a chronically ill patient to reach these goals. Your enthusiasm makes me day!

[4] Practically, I realize that you are not able to keep up to date on every medication that is out there on the market, but when you have to ask me how to spell the name of my drug three times, which happens to have an ad in all the best-selling magazines, I question how often you get out of the office.

[5] When you say things like, "You cope so well with your disease. I really admire what a great attitude you have," that can keep me going for another week.

[6] I'm thankful for the times you ask "Can I pray for you?" Though some of your patients will say no, for many it will be the first time someone has ever cared enough to ask.

[7] There are times when I am have been having a medical procedure and my family is not able to be there. I know it's a minor procedure for you, but the fact that you understand it's a major procedure to me, and you stick around and hold my hand, is one of the nicest things anyone ever does for me.

[8] I am what some call a "professional patient" so when I'm in the hospital, I struggle with giving you control over all of my medications to disperse on your schedule. I'm used to taking care of myself and monitoring my own pain levels. When you make an effort to get me my medications on time, I appreciate you going the extra mile. The time of morning I take my medications makes only difference in my pain level for the day.

[9] I know you have bad days too. Feel free to tell me "Today has been a little crazy." You are allowed to be grumpy, but let me know if I am not specifically the cause of your mood and to the so I don't take it personally.

[10] When I'm trying to schedule an appointment for a specific day, or you are trying to reach me and I'm unavailable, I'm not trying to be difficult. Although a lot of my time is filled with doctors appointments, therapies, lab tests, etc. I'm also trying to have as normal of life as possible and give my family the same thing.

[11] I appreciate it when you are able to call in prescriptions so they are ready at the pharmacy when I get there. I know it's an extra step for you, but it helps me tremendously.

[12] When I'm in the hospital, I'm very grateful for the things you help me to do such as shower, change the sheets on the bed, or even just have a conversation to distract me from the pain. It makes a difference in my stay. Thanks for not treating me like a project, but a person.

Being chronically ill is not easy. Neither is the career of a nurse. By each person remembering to say, "thank you" and "I admire your strength," both the nurse and the patient can have an effective, even enjoyable, relationship.
