Gracie family patriarch and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu pioneer Helio Gracie died in early 2009 in Rio de Janeiro at the age of 95. Its impossible to overestimate his influence on martial arts, and particularly his pathbreaking role in what is now the sport of mixed martial arts. The Gracie family name will forever be synonymous with Brazilian sports, jiu-jitsu, MMA and the UFC"not only due to Helios own accomplishments but the legacy he created both by training others and through his family.

Helio Gracie began studying martial arts early in life, and by the age of 16 had already begun to teach judo in his native Brazil. While Helio had no problem mastering the theoretical aspects of judo, he found that many of its techniques required a great deal of brute strength which made them less effective for a smaller fighter such as himself. Along with his brother Carlos, he began to adapt many of judos techniques to make them more reliant on leverage rather than strength. This experimentation led to the creation of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) which is often referred to as Gracie Jiu-Jitsu in his honor.

Gracie also had a professional fighting career of his own, taking on champions from other fighting disciplines in an early version of modern MMA. These bouts were arduous, unregulated affairs with arbitrary rules and no time limits. By his own recollection, Gracie fought 15 times against the top opponents of his time. He began his career in'32 by submitting professional boxer Antonio Portugal in just 32 seconds. Later that year, he fought American catch wrestler Frank Ebert to a draw after the ringside doctor ordered the bout stopped after an ungodly fourteen ten minute rounds.

Gracie's most famous opponent was against legendary Japanese judoka Masahiko Kimura. Gracie fought bravely in a losing cause, and ironically may have enhanced his reputation in defeat. He refused to submit to a reverse arm bar (the move that is now known as a 'kimura' in honor of its inventor), and the fight ended after his brother Carlos threw in the towel after Helio's arm had been broken.

Gracie's greatest impact, however, may have been through his progeny which is an important part of Brazilian sports and mixed martial arts even today. Royce Gracie is well known as the first UFC superstar, while sons Rickson Royler, Renzo have also achieved considerable fame in professional MMA. At the time of his death, Helio Gracie was a 6th Dan Judo black belt and the only living 10th degree master of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

The cause of Gracies death was officially given as natural causes. He had been having stomach problems for several days prior to his passing, and was admitted to a Rio hospital for this reason. His seriously epic last words will go down as a fitting envoi to a man who gave so much of himself to fighting:

The "fenders" on western saddle are slender strips of leather in between the seat and the stirrups to keep the rider's legs from touching the horse.

Government Ban On Biker Colors In Bars !

There is a new law in Virginia that will ban Motorcycle Club Colors in Bars. The law, originally aimed at Street Gangs, is causing quite a stir with Virginia Bikers. The law states that Bar & Restaurant owners will lose their liquor license if they allow patrons who wear "gang" related attire such as Club Logo's or Colored Bandannas.

These sort of "grey area" laws are extremely dangerous and a threat to everyone's freedom. Who decides what constitutes "Gang Apparel"? I'm wondering if Boy Scouts are going to be able to eat together at Applebees if they are in their uniforms.

According to news reports, many Bikers and Motorcycle Club Members in Virginia have already begun fighting this law. If a law like this is allowed to stand in Virginia, it won't be long until it is passed in other states across America!

We as Motorcyclists and Bikers (It does not matter what you call yourself) have to realize fast that we are all connected. It doesn't matter what you ride, what State you live in or who you Support, we're all in this together. What effects Me effects you and it doesn't matter what you happen to think of me.

When the local Bar you and your Brothers love hanging out at is told that you and all other members of Motorcycle Clubs can no longer go there or they will revoke the Bars liquor license, What then?

This is no Joke my Biker Brothers, every month there is another new law that is aimed not only Motorcycle Club Members, but all Americans. It seems that every time the Government wants to take away a freedom, they find a way to craft a new law for our "safety". What kind of Country is this turning into when you can't wear what you want and suddenly, your constitutional right to assemble is taken away from you?

Although there are many ignorant people out there that believe Motorcycle Clubs are Gangs, that's simply not the case. Most Motorcycle Clubs are made up of hard working, honest, law abiding, patriotic, American Citizens who enjoy a common bond, Motorcycles. It's what is in a persons heart that determines who they are, not the clothes they wear.

In the past year the government has taken away the Colors of one Motorcycle Club. A law enforcement officer can demand anyone sporting the Clubs logo to forfeit it. The theory is that the loss of the logo strips the club of its "gang identity."

Grant it, it appears that some of the Clubs members may have been involved in illegal activities, but that doesn't mean that everyone who rides a Motorcycle should be punished for it. In fact, less than 10% of this 600 Member Club was even accused of wrong doing.

In addition, the Government and law enforcement agencies have been spending millions of our dollars to influence friends and ex-members of Motorcycle Clubs in an effort to infiltrate these clubs in hopes of catching members doing something illegal. Often, when they find that the Club they've infiltrated is nothing more than a group of Patriotic, Law Abiding Men & Women, they'll fabric wrong doing so that they can justify the enormous amount of resources spent on these Fishing Expeditions.

Just imagine how much better off we'd all be if they used those resources to investigate the Corrupt Politicians, the Corporations that control our Country, Wall Street, and the other issues that are quickly sinking this great Nation.

What I want to know is, what will be the last straw? What's it going to take for us to say enough is enough? We can not fight these Laws and Fight each other at the same time! We need to work together to save what we are, who we are.

The Government has taken away our rights to ride the Motorcycle we want, to wear what we want and now to go where we want! Why are we still fighting each other? When are we going to wake up??

The True Story Of The Ali/Inoki Fight

Decades before mixed martial arts became popular in the United States, events matching fighters of different fighting disciplines were very common in Japan. They weren't called "mixed martial arts" at the time, but that's essentially what they were.There's an entire history of pro wrestlers fighting specialists from other martial arts (particularly judo) that were leaving out, but during the'70's Antonio Inoki began to put the concept of "mixed martial arts" on the map with his matches against fighters from other disciplines.

Inoki would often face other martial artists in fights that are widely accepted to have been "worked" (having a predetermined outcome) in the same manner as professional wrestling matches. While Inoki faced a number of karate, judo and boxing champions his most famous match was certainly his fight against world heavyweight boxing champion Muhammad Ali.

There are differing accounts of how the best heavyweight boxer in history found himself in a ring in Tokyo's Budokan Arena against a pro wrestler. One thing is certain--it was viewed as an easy payday for Ali, who'd lost a good chunk of his prime earning years to his controversial stance over the Vietnam war. That's what got him there in the first place, and that's what kept him there after the two sides began squabbling over the rules and the outcome of the fight. Some suggest that it was supposed to be a "fair fight" going in and once Ali saw Inoki spar he insisted on rules changes to tilt the fight in his favor. Another more likely version of the story suggests that Ali's handlers knew that the fight was supposed to be a "work" all along. They made the deal with Inoki's people based on this fact, and were all on board as to the outcome of the match and how it would "finish". The "original" plan was to have Inoki win in a controversial manner that would keep his undefeated streak in "MMA" matches intact while allowing Ali to "save face. The only person who wasn't aware of the game plan, however, was Ali himself. When informed that he was supposed to "take a dive", even in a convoluted fashion, Ali refused. No agreement was reached between the two camps and at the last minute a legit fight transpired. The promoters were left with a sold out Budokan, a worldwide PPV audience and two fighters who despite every effort to the contrary would actually have to fight each other.

The rules that were in place on fight night were so ridiculously one sided in favor of Ali that it almost defies belief. Inoki wasn't allowed to hit Ali with a closed fist, nor strike him in the head at all. He was also prohibited from using any sort of choke or submission maneuver. Most problematically, he was prohibited from trying to take Ali to the ground. In other words, Inoki was basically not permitted to do anything that would threaten Ali with any sort of physical harm.

The result was an absolutely horrible fight. Neither man showed much interest in engaging the other, with Inoki spending most of the time on the ground doing what he could under the one sided rules. Inoki threw kicks at Ali's legs, Ali threw an occasional jab and tried to protect himself from his opponent's leg strikes. The fight ended a 74-74 draw, with the real losers being the fans.

The fight was officiated by former pro wrestler "Judo" Gene Labell, a legendary tough guy considered at the time to be the 'baddest man on the planet'. He could have easily beaten up both men, possibly at the same time. That might have provided some much needed entertainment to liven up the tedious charade masquerading as a fight.

The fiasco didn't hurt Inoki's popularity in Japan whatsoever. Oddly, he became something of a hero for trying to take the fight to Ali despite the one sided rules. He would remain one of Japan's most popular pro wrestlers and later serve in the country's parliament. Inoki's fights against other martial artists remained wildly popular, and are often credited as being the forerunner of PRIDE, RINGS and the major MMA organizations in Japan today.

According to the National Gardening Association's 2009 Impact of Home and Community Gardening In America report, 7 million more households are participating in home vegetable gardening, as well as fruit, herbs and berry cultivation this year, compared to last. This means that 37% of all US households are doing some of their own food production. The number of home gardeners has increased 19%, compared to just 10% from 2007-2008. "More Americans are recognizing the benefits of growing their own produce, including improved quality, taste and cost savings," the NGA report concludes.

So just who are all these new gardeners? "The demographics of today's food gardening households include a broad cross-section of the U.S. population. There are few other outdoor activities where virtually every demographic group is so well represented, no matter what their age, education, income, marital status, household size, gender, or regional location," concludes the NGA report.

The food gardening experience is enjoyed primarily by women (54%), those ages 45+ (68%), college students (43%) and married couples with no children at home (67%). The gardeners are pretty evenly spread across the South, Midwest, West and Northeast. Those making $35,000 - $49,999 in household income are the most common gardening group (24%), although many who make over $75,000 (22%), under $35,000 (21%) and between $50,000 and $74,999 (16%) are also represented.

Among active home gardeners, 11% say they'll increase the amount and variety of vegetables they're growing in 2010, as well as share more of their produce with others. About 10% say they'll spend more time on their gardens and do more preserving this year. Of the 21% of households who are beginning their first gardens, 11% say they'll start by growing herbs, 10% say they'll start with vegetable container gardening, 5% are beginning a full backyard vegetable garden and 4% will try their hand at berry growing.

When asked why home gardeners are participating in the gardening experience, the overwhelming majority (58%) said they want "better-tasting food." The Arena Football League Calls It Quits

After canceling their 2009 season, the Arena Football League has shut down entirely and appears headed for bankruptcy. Earlier this week, the league office released a short statement indicated that it had ceased operations because owners were "unable to reach any consensus on restructuring the league over the past eight months." The leagues statement continued that there are no other viable options available to the league right now."

Even before the decision was made to cancel the 2009 season this past December, it had been a tumultuous off-season for the Arena Football League. It began with the resignation of long time AFL commissioner David Baker just two days before the Arena Bowl championship game. Though Baker put a positive spin on his resignation saying that he felt it was time, the timing was curious despite his insistence that it was due to "personal reasons".

In October, the owner of the New Orleans VooDoo announced that the team would cease operations"despite being one of the league leaders in attendance. In announcing that the team would fold, owner Tom Benson (who also owns the NFL Saints) suggested that the end of the five year old franchise was in no way an indictment of the New Orleans market. Instead, he cryptically explained that it was due to circumstances currently affecting the league and the team."

With a dispersal draft planned to reassign the VooDoo personnel, uncertainty began to reign over the leagues future. The dispersal draft was scheduled and postponed several times amid assurances from the AFL office that rumors of financial instability were unfounded. The most recent announcement finally put all of the speculation to rest.

The inability to get any consensus on a business model for the league reportedly served as the final nail in the AFLs coffin. A major problem was skyrocketing player salaries, and some sort of compensation system tied to team revenues was a necessity. That agreement was reached with the players, but a bigger schism was left between several factions of owners"primarily drawn along lines of overall wealth.

Despite the demise of the Arena Football League, it wont be the end of the road for the twenty two year old sport. known as The 50 yard indoor war . Arena Football lives on in the AF2 league which, ironically, was originally started as something of a developmental organization for the AFL. The league plays in smaller markets and has a more realistic salary structure. A number of current AFL players"and possibly a couple of AFL franchises"could end up in AF2.

Second: Make is as important (and equally easy) as brushing one's teeth.

Realising dreams can be just like brushing one's teeth. It simply doesn't feel nice if we do not brush our teeth for pretty long, isn't it? We can't bother to spend hours considering which toothpaste we should use or wait to clean teeth till there is some need to do so. We feel a little out of sorts if our teeth are not clean. So we clean them. That is all!

Back to our example, if giving is our utmost desire, then we need to ask ourselves these questions: What if giving actually was as important as brushing our teeth? What if it makes us feel good? And what if it kept our life healthy?

Irrespective of how much or how little we own right now, we surely can start offering it and sharing it today. As such, no matter how improbable the realisation of dreams might appear, we can start walking towards them today. We can definitely do, if we see it as a crucial issue, a top priority that we should stick to every day! Then we will be uncomfortable if we do not do it. Just like cleaning our teeth.

and Third: Give first, then we will get back

When we give first before we actually fully have what we really want - what we dream of - we send a very powerful message to ourselves that says, "there is enough, and more will come". It allows us to experience the joy today - the joy of giving.

If you want to be rich, be generous. And you'll be blessed with abundance. If you want to be superbly intelligent, don't be afraid to teach others. And you'll know more. If you want to give, just give selflessly. Do not attach any expectation of return. Just let go. And joy will automatically be rewarded to you. The simple joy of giving.

Do not be scared of sharing and giving what you have, for it will not thwart your plans of achieving your purpose, whatever it may be. It may only help you to fulfil your dreams faster. And your journey there will be one of total contentment.

But are not habits smaller, in comparison with our BIG dreams?

Just manage do it, no need to worry about the 'scale'.

Because anything can take place in life. We might get started in a pretty simple way. And these simple things might lead us to another act, and form there to another. Our confidence in our simple actions and executing them one by one constantly takes us forward. But if we feel that it is unfeasible to do something now because it is simply unachievable, it is unlikely to ever happen.

The secret of achieving one's dreams has always been there, and it will always be there. Those who are winners, who have inspired others, and have known perfect joy, have realized this. They are continuously using it.

Visions and miracles do not happen accidentally. We choose to create them.

I remember the floor and everything around me was spinning and it was only me who was feeling like this. I ended up lying on the floor on my stomach hoping that everything else became still around me.

Behaviour Isn't Getting Any Better? Then You're On The Wrong Track!!!

So, to the harsh reality of the heading of this article. If they're not behaving then you're not doing it right.... Oh Liz, that really is harsh. Maybe it is harsh - but it's true.... Either as a school (and kids' behaviour should be an all school issue) or in individual classrooms, if behaviour isn't improving (and presumably people want it to?) then something is being done wrongly. The great thing is though, anyone can learn the skills to effectively manage children's behaviour. As I've written before - skill and confidence are the keys to success.

It's exactly the same as any other skill or technique that you want to master. You have to know what to do, practice doing it, and then keep on doing it and taking it on a step further to extend your knowledge, skill and confidence. I've been practising my skills for years now - if you've read Behaviour Bible you'll know about my first day dealing with children's extreme behaviour. Well, strictly speaking I wasn't dealing with it. It was a complete disaster - dreadful. I hadn't got any idea what I was doing. I was at the same stage as many people I talk to and observe now.

I had to learn, but there wasn't anyone to teach me. Because of that it took a while - quite a long while really. Gradually I cottoned on to what was needed - I had to change. I now use the successful behaviour management techniques I have established to teach other people and believe me it doesn't have to take you the length of time it took me. You can see the impact of the techniques in minutes. Children read the situation and recognise and respond to an adult 'doing it right'!!

While I've been working with extreme behaviour the situation in schools has become far worse and bad behaviour is so common in schools that there's a danger of it being thought of as normal. Adults should be appalled by behaviour they see but I see people accepting such behaviour. They seem to believe that there's nothing they can do - I call it 'learned helplessness'. There's just a shrug of the shoulders and a 'what do you expect us to do about it?' attitude.

So, you have to ask yourself, 'Is what I am doing to manage behaviour getting the results I want?' If the answer is, 'No', then you're not doing it right - you have to accept that you have things to learn and changes to make. Then, life becomes a great deal easier, less stressful and more productive. It's a win/win situation.

When you are writing down the ideas, you will find easier to understand your own thoughts. Write what you think. It's a process of transforming your ideas into words, with logical thinking. This is absolutely an advantage.

You are actually training your 'explain power' while you write down what is only half-understood by yourself. When people are made to put thoughts into logical words and sentences, they are defining the rationale behind what they think and feel. This progression onto a sensible definition is indeed a way to understand and explain unresolved problems to yourself.

Writing is a problem-solving technique. Keeping your own journal and book of thoughts will help you with comprehension. Say you are stuck with a dilemma and you cannot come up with a solution. Just explain to yourself, in written form, whatever ideas that you have. Do not bother if they are not at all feasible. Sometimes out of the blue, what you have put down on the paper will turn into the perfect solution!

Writes usually does not write something they have already understood. They prefer to write something that they does not fully understand and they really want to learn it. So try to write a book about a topic that you want to learn better.

I strongly agree that writing is a great tool to better thinking. For me, I really have a much better understanding of this thinking method, after I finished writing this article.

With Type 2 diabetes symptoms can be mild and go unnoticed for years causing a delay in treatment. It is characterized by a resistance to the insulin that is being produced by the islet cells located in the pancreas.

People who are unaware they have type 2 diabetes are at an extreme risk of experiencing a diabetic emergency event when their symptoms become severe. Additionally, hypoglycemia or low blood sugar can occur which is the exact opposite of diabetes mellitus.

There are two types of a diabetic emergency:

The first type of diabetic emergency is hyperglycemia. This condition occurs when there is not enough insulin and too much glucose in the blood. Factors that contribute to the onset of this event include overeating, no physical activity and not taking the proper amount of insulin. When this occurs, the patient requires insulin, without it, they can easily go into a diabetic coma.

The second type of diabetic event is called hypoglycemia. This event refers to too much insulin and not enough glucose being present in the blood which can then result in insulin shock. Common factors that trigger this event include over exercising, not eating enough food and injecting to much insulin. Someone suffering from hypoglycemia is in need of sugar.

The emergency measures are the same for both conditions. If the person is conscious, getting them something to eat or drink, such as orange juice, milk, or a candy bar will help reduce symptoms. Then get medical help as quickly as possible.

Elevated urinary output: Occurs due to elevated glucose levels and the body's attempt to get rid of it. Bad news for us, the patients, because that kind of duopoly can't be good for competition and innovation, the two forces we see as critical to moving these devices forward in terms of ease of use and comfort for patients. So we were delighted to see that Fisher & Paykel, a longtime participant in the Sleep Apnea device market, but, in our view, something of an ugly stepchild to Respironics and ResMed, has quietly and without much fanfare brought to market a device that might very well embody the most innovative steps forward yet. The Fisher & Paykel Sleepstyle 200 Auto Series HC254 was cleared by the FDA to go to market in September 2008. The machine has many nice bells and whistles, with two standing out as particularly innovative: SensAwake Technology

Just like Santa, this machine knows when you are sleeping, and knows when you're awake. The result: no need to be good for goodness sake and just "take" the high pressure other machines will dish out during your wakeful states. Pressure is not needed when you're awake, and can prevent some people from getting to sleep. This machine's algorithm detects the kind of breathing you do when you're awake and reduces the delivered pressure to its lowest, most comfortable level at this time. Similarly, the machine's algorithm detects the kind of breathing you do when you're asleep, and increases the pressure accordingly. Other machines try to solve for the discomfort of delivering high pressure while awake by providing a "ramp" feature that requires the user to push a button to have the pressure gradually ramp up. But that is a more crude solution than Fisher & Paykel's SensAwake technology which does the work for you, and keeps the pressure where it needs to be until it "knows" you're asleep. The last thing we need is something else to worry about and fumble with while we're trying to get some shut eye. SmartStick Technology

Like many ResMed and Respironics machines, the HC254 is data-capable and records therapy effectiveness, including duration of use, AHI, leak and pressure. Unlike most ResMed and Respironics machines, however, the HC254 records this data onto a "SmartStick" at the rear of the device that can be removed and plugged into any other computer through that computer's USB port. Most ResMed and Respironics machines record data onto a smart card of some sort that requires the purchase not only of additional software, but also of a card reader compatible with the particular brand of smart card ResMed and Respironics have developed.

The result is that users have to go through unnatural acts to actually access their detailed usage data (i.e., data not available through the display screens on the devices themselves). Unfortunately, even though in theory USB technology makes access to the data easier, as of the date of this publication, Fisher & Paykel seems to restrict the sale of the PerformanceMaximizer software for the HC254 to clinicians, which means patients will get the shaft, as usual, in terms of being able to access their detailed compliance data. We may be mistaken on this one, and welcome any of our users, or F&P themselves, providing a link to a vendor of this software that will sell us the software.
